Location Location is sponsoring ten children in Hackney through a year of after-school learning at the ‘Ship of Adventures’ in Kingsland High Street. And staff at the estate agency will be going along to volunteer.
When we first came across Hackney Pirates we were really inspired by the work they are doing to help local children. Hackney Pirates helps around 160 children aged nine to 12 each year. They’ve created a magical out-of-school learning environment, complete with secret passageways, an underwater cave and a ship’s cat. Working with professionals, they help children write their own books, CDs and websites – offering the chance to practise writing skills. We’re blown away by the amazing difference Hackney Pirates are making to children who are falling behind in their literacy. This programme reaches children who have fewer advantages in their home-lives and who aren’t reading as well as their peers. They make a tremendous difference – giving children the confidence to read and write.
Two thirds of children in low-income households in the UK fall below the expected levels in reading and writing by the age of 11 . The attainment gap widens as they transition to secondary school. Devised and run by teachers, the Hackney Pirates programme, which recently won an FSI Small Charity Big Impact Award, helps children catch up. Hundreds of people from the local community offer their time to help. They have big plans to help 800 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds each year.
By the end of their year the students are published authors: Hackney Pirates sells the books they publish in their coffee shop and book shop, which fronts their community space.
We’re always looking for ways to help in the community, from acting as a collection point for Hackney Food Bank to the toy appeal we run at Christmas with StokeyParents. We’re very excited to now be working so closely with this incredible literacy charity. Look out for our Winter edition of Word on the street, we’ll be featuring some of the works of the young pirates and celebrating their success on this wonderful journey.
You can support this incredible charity by visiting the shop & café at ‘The Ship of Adventures’, 138 Kingsland High Street. To volunteer with the pirates and for more information, visit www.hackneypirates.org
