Dream design approach for local architects

A boutique architectural practice takes an unusual approach to design. The team at Scenario Architecture asks clients to imagine their perfect Saturday morning at home – sometimes clients’ children join in with the dreaming – and everyone’s encouraged to spoil themselves.

Managing Director Ran Ankory said:  “We don’t have a particular style – we’re much more methodical – it starts with our name Scenario; we base our designs on a deep understanding of how people use their homes and how they would like to use their homes. We delve into it and the process ends up being very creative. Working in this way people become very particular about what they want, and we get way beyond a skeleton brief.”

Scenario use advanced 3D design tools and virtual reality tours to help clients get a real picture of their future home.

Scenario was established by Ran and his wife Maya Carni in 2007 and how has a team of 10. Their own home in Stoke Newington was recently shortlisted for a RIBA London Award.  The fun renovation of their Victorian house includes a split-level open-plan double reception, which incorporates the basement, a quirky angled roof light and a floating library leading upstairs.

Every inch of available space has been utilised, with space under the stairs featuring a pull-out table and bench. The children’s bedroom includes a ‘secret space’ entered via a climbing wall and exited using a fireman’s pole.

Scenario has an in-house project manager. They’ve built a strong relationship with planning officers at Hackney and Islington Councils and their passion is for residential refurbishments extensions and new build homes.  Most of their work comes via word of mouth.

When they first started Scenario, without a first project, Ran and Maya bought a rundown flat in Stoke Newington, gutted and renovated it. They did all the building work themselves. Their first paid work was a kitchen extension in Highgate – 10 years later that client has moved and enlisted Scenario to help again.

Ran’s top tip for homeowners wishing to get a feel for how good an architect is, is to check out the local authority’s Planning Application records – by searching the name of an architectural practice you can generate a full list of their projects in that area and see how successful they’ve been at gaining planning consent.
