Curious Cockney off to a flying start

A former fashion buyer for Topshop, River Island and ASOS has put her eye for style to good use with a website featuring London’s best East End makers.  The Curious Cockney, which was launched by Mile End mother-of-two Sam Parsley this week, features fashion and homewares for those with a passion for design. And she’s already amassed a whopping 20,000 Instagram followers.

“When I stopped to think about what I wanted to do I kept coming back to my love of the East End and everything that’s here”, said Sam.

“There are so many interesting, creative people here – I’ve been a fashion buyer and travelled so much on shopping trips: Tokyo, New York and more yet in the end I still find the East End is the best. I visit Columbia Road every Saturday and there’s so much newness coming on, which I want to get behind. 75 per cent of the products we sell come from the East End.”

Sam has invested her savings into purchasing stock and setting up the business. Among the 20 plus local suppliers featured are Paradise Row, Limehouse Ceramics, Earl of the East, Jess Jos, Paradise Row and 57 Design.

Sam added: “Many of the people we work with really do work out of garden shed’s, small studios and in some cases from home and they don’t have the time, or resources, to sit listing their products all day.”

The Curious Cockney aims to promote unique products above mainstream and supports independent makers and small businesses.  Products are mainly one-offs.

Asked about the highs of working for herself, Sam replied: “In a large company it can take so many meetings to get anywhere but working for yourself you can just make it happen. The freedom to think of an idea and action it is amazing.  It’s also great to be spending more time with the family.  I had been a mythical creature at home for such a long time and it felt great to spend some time with them before they really were at the stage when they would rather I wasn’t here.”

Sam created the website herself with help from her partner David, a music video director – they taught themselves via YouTube tutorials.

“When I stopped to think about what I wanted to do I kept coming back to my love of the East End and everything that’s here”, said Sam.
