Get the scoop on Church Street’s newest business

Summer looks set to be a whole lot sweeter in Stoke Newington as famous gelati Oddono’s prepares to open-up shop in Church Street.

This award-winning ice Italian gelato was raved about by Gordon Ramsey and Michael Winner and its chocolate gelato was described as “heaven” by Time Out.

It’ll open soon in the former Abi Ruchi Indian restaurant, near Whole Foods – renovations are set to begin after the Bank Holiday weekend.

This will be a brilliant fit for Stoke Newington – with so many families here and such fantastic green spaces to enjoy, a quality gelato will be a wonderful addition to the street.

The difference between gelato and ice-cream is huge. The fat that’s in mass produced ice-cream coats the tongue and that can mask the taste but gelato has less fat so you can really taste the flavours. And they tend to have much less air than commercial ice cream. Good gelato simply tastes much better.

Oddono’s was launched in July 2004 in South Kensington by Christian Oddono, who remembered tasting his grandmother’s homemade gelato.  The high-end chain now has branches in Battersea, East Dulwich, Chiswick and Hampstead.

Their gelato is made daily at an “artisan laboratory” in South Kensington with the finest natural ingredients from around the world and it’s free from colourings, preservatives and GM products.

Among the 130+ flavours are cinnamon, basil, chocolate and cognac, vodka lemon, honey, chocolate, hazelnut and pistachio. And they also offer sorbets (which contain no fat).
